On the 19th of June 2024, a team of D²iCE researchers Daniel Jakab, Sushil Sharma, Seamie Hayes, Sanjay Kumar, Anam Manzoor and Reenu Mohandas led by Ciarán Eising attended the 3rd Resilient and Robust Sensing for Automated Systems for Transportation conference organized by the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) in association with Automotive Electronics Innovation (AESIN) at the University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom.

UL IEEE Student Branch – Research week event

On 30th April 2024, the newly formed IEEE Student Branch of the University of Limerick organised its first event as part of the UL research week, a Panel discussion on the Impact of AI in Science and Engineering: Policy, Application and Advancement. This event was organised as part of the UL research week. We had a very diverse panel, including Prof. Ita Richardson (Dept of CSIS & the Co. Principal Investigator in Lero), Dr Pepijn Van de Ven (Dept ECE and Director of D²iCE Research centre), Dr Gerard Dooly (School of Engineering and CRIS research centre) and Dr Bharath Sudharsan (Senior AI ML Data Engineer, General Motors).
UL researchers partner on study revealing effectiveness of multimedia intervention in treating depression in older adults

An international study involving researchers at University of Limerick has shown that multimedia intervention delivered via WhatsApp can be effective for treating depression in older people. The pioneering international research trial, the results of which have just been published in the Nature Medicine Journal, developed and trialled a low-cost mobile messaging psychosocial intervention in socioeconomically deprived areas of Brazil.

D²iCE Researcher's Report on the Application of NLP for Analysing Survey Data

Dr. Arash Joorabchi and Ph.D. candidate Abbirah Ahmed investigated the application of various NLP methods for automatic analysis and visualization of the StudentSurvey.ie dataset. Over the last 6 years, 232,450 students have completed StudentSurvey.ie, each answering over 60 questions about their experiences of higher education. This project aimed to evaluate the application and effectiveness of various NLP methods for automatic analysis and visualization of free-form text answers in the dataset.

The IEEE P2020 Automotive Image Quality Standard Workshop was held at Leopard Imaging, Fremont, California on 25-26 January, immediately after the nearby Electronic Imaging 2024 symposium. This hosted a total of 60 participants for 2 days, with 20 in-person participants and 40 online participants.

On the 20th of January 2024, as members of the D2iCE group, we were delighted to depart from Dublin Airport on a journey to the 36th Edition of the Electronic Imaging Conference 2024 in Burlingame, San Francisco, California. This conference is one of the most popular in terms of Image Quality and Image Processing which covers a vast array of applications including security, virtual reality, machine vision, and data analysis, among others. Some of the greatest minds gather to discuss the latest research breakthroughs of the 21st century.

The Electronic Imaging 2024 Symposium took place from January 21 -25 in Burlingame, California hosting a series of intertwined imaging science events that allow attendees to expand their knowledge and networks through a rich symposium programme.
University of Limerick PhD students Daniel Jakab and Sushil Sharma presented at the Autonomous Vehicles and Machines (AVM) conference, chaired by its co-founder and UL Associate Professor Patrick Denny and Intel AI Algorithms Lead Peter VanBeek.

We were thrilled to host the second edition of the D²iCE Research Day, which took place on the 7th of September, 2023 at the Lero Tierney Building on the University of Limerick campus. The event served as a collaborative platform for researchers, scholars, industry experts, and students from diverse backgrounds, all bound together by a shared interest in the realms of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

The D²iCE team recently attended the Irish Machine Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference 2023, held at the University of Galway from August 29th to September 1st. This is the flagship conference of the Irish Pattern Recognition and Classification Society (IPRCS). The event brought together experts and researchers from computer vision, offering a platform to showcase Irish research in the vision space and exchange knowledge. D²iCE researchers presented six papers that tackled diverse challenges in the realm of computer vision.

D²iCE researchers Kaavya Rekanar and Ciarán Eising co-organised the 4th Omnidirectional Computer Vision (OmniCV) workshop took place on June 19th, 2023, as part of the prestigious Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) in Vancouver, Canada. This workshop aimed to delve into the latest developments and applications of omnidirectional imaging, showcasing its potential to solve real-world problems across various fields. With an emphasis on maximizing a camera’s field of view, the workshop aimed to bridge the gap between research and commercial products, encouraging the advancement of algorithms and applications in this exciting imaging modality.
D²iCE researchers kick off Personae project in Odense Denmark

On May 2nd and 3rd, D²iCE researchers Dr. Pepijn van de Ven and Dr. Eoin Martino Grua took part in the kick-off meeting for the Personae project in Odense Denmark. D²iCE is responsible for the use of machine learning in this innovative project funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. The project aims to use machine learning for allocation of patients to the most appropriate mental health intervention, and the subsequent personalisation of the intervention. Over two enjoyable and productive days with partners from the University of Southern Denmark, Monsenso and ’Is It A Bird’ we made exciting plans for the next four years.
D²iCE researchers contribute to research and innovation project around use of machine learning for mental health in the €3 million Innovation Fund Denmark Personae project

D²iCE researchers Dr. Pepijn van de Ven and Dr. Eoin Martino Grua will start a new project, called Personae with a consortium of Danish partners funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. In this €3 million project, Dr. Van de Ven and Dr. Grua will be responsible for the machine learning components that will allow automatic screening of patients in mental health interventions and the personalisation of treatments based on patient needs.
Two D²iCE researchers are featured in the ECMI blog

Both are part of the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training (CRT) in Foundations of Data Science and completed their industry placements with Valeo last summer.

At the Irish Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science (AICS 2022), D2iCE researchers Aryan Singh, Sushil Sharma, and Ciarán Hogan presented their posters on the use of graph-based neural networks for medical imaging, autonomous vehicle trajectory prediction, and computer vision in the detection of host vehicle body in an on-board camera, respectively.
Confirm Annual Conference 2022

On the 23rd and 24th of November 2022, the D²iCE group attended the Confirm Annual Conference 2022. Confirm members across Ireland were invited to the Salthill Hotel Galway to learn about the research outputs made for manufacturing for a resilient economy, society and environment. Dr. Eoin Martino Grua, of the D²iCE group researchers, was asked to present the current advancements made with the BInspect project, done in collaboration with AMCS. The presentation was well received and deemed to be an excellent example of a smooth collaboration between industry and Confirm resulting in research outputs swiftly being translated to real industrial applications.

D²iCE at AutoSens, the largest conference in the world dedicated to automotive imaging

Patrick Denny, of the D²iCE group, is one of the co-founders of the AutoSens conference, the largest conference in the world dedicated to automotive imaging. Patrick is shown below chairing a panel discussion shown, with representatives from BMW, Bosch, EuroNCAP and Xperi. Overall, there were 600 attendees at the conference. Topics covered included the latest technology in exterior and in-cabin sensing which form the basis of self-driving cars In attendance were representatives from OnSemi, Xperi, Provizio and others involved in the Irish tech ecosystem, and car companies such as BMW.
